Applied Physics Specialist
Job Description
Posted on: April 21, 2026
Applied Physics Specialist (AI Training)About The Role What if your years of physics expertise could directly shape how AI understands the physical world? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to probe the limits of cutting-edge AI models — designing problems that expose where these systems break down, and providing the rigorous feedback needed to fix them. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. No prior AI experience needed — just deep mastery of physics and the ability to communicate complex ideas with precision.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Design advanced, open-ended physics problems at PhD qualifying exam level — requiring multi-step reasoning and rigorous mathematical derivation
- Author comprehensive "golden" solutions with flawless step-by-step logic, precise constants, and accurate unit conversions
- Audit AI-generated simulations, proofs, and explanations for physical consistency — identifying where models "hallucinate" violations of first principles
- Provide structured, expert feedback to improve AI reasoning around boundary conditions, conservation laws, and physical constraints
- Work independently and asynchronously — fully on your own schedule
Who You Are
- PhD completed or in final stages in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
- Deep mastery across the core pillars of physics: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
- Exceptional ability to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured English
- Uncompromising eye for detail — units, scientific notation, dimensional analysis, and logical proof structure
- Self-motivated and consistent when working independently
- No prior AI or tech experience required
Nice to Have
- Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance for research outputs
- Proficiency with tools such as MATLAB, COMSOL, Python (NumPy/SciPy), or similar
- Background in research, academia, or applied engineering environments
- Familiarity with AI tools or language model evaluation as an end user
Why Join Us
- Work on high-impact AI projects alongside the world's leading AI research labs
- Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
- Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, intellectually rigorous work
- Gain firsthand exposure to how cutting-edge large language models are trained and evaluated
- Contribute to ensuring AI systems respect the fundamental laws that govern our physical world
- Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
