Job Description

Posted on: March 25, 2026

Overview

We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join Byte Engineering and work across our portfolio of client projects. Your primary engagement (approximately 3 days per week) will be with a client in the cardiac research space, where you will design and build secure, reliable, cloud-native data solutions for processing ECG and related cardiological and patient data for the purpose of medical research and eventual application directly in a clinical setting. On this project, you’ll work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders (e.g. clinicians and researchers) to turn real-world needs into scalable, well-tested data pipelines and data models that aim to drive clinical value through supporting research activities that will lead to direct application in a clinical setting. You will work as part of an inter-disciplinary team where your responsibility will be for the implementation and maintenance of the data platform, with direct oversight from a technical team-lead, but the expectation of a high degree of independence in the delivery of your work.

Alongside this primary engagement, you will also contribute to other Byte Engineering client projects (approximately 2 days per week), bringing your data engineering skills to a variety of industries and technical challenges. This offers the opportunity to broaden your experience across different domains, tech stacks, and problem spaces whilst being part of a collaborative and technically excellent consultancy team.

Location: Remote (UK or EU-based)

Salary: competitive based on local rates

Engagement duration: open-ended

Engagement type: This role is offered as a direct contract-for-services with a self-employed contractor (sole trader or sole proprietor)

What we are looking for in a candidate

  • 2+ years work experience related to hands on implementation of data/analytics processes (this number can include PhD experience).
  • Ability to work directly with technical & non-technical stakeholders (e.g. clinicians, academic researchers, business teams) to translate discussions into relevant user stories & requirements.
  • Comfort working independently and owning delivery of outcomes end-to-end.
  • Ability to investigate and evaluate data-based solutions that may be new to you.
  • Experience building and maintaining production-grade data pipelines (ETL or ELT) and data models, ideally with experience owning and delivering some of these end-to-end as an individual contributor.
  • Strong experience with data-related services in a cloud provider (ideally in Azure, but transferable knowledge and practices are most important here).
  • Strong skills in using SQL to both perform analytics & build data models.
  • Strong knowledge of Python, focusing on its use in orchestration, monitoring & execution of data pipelines.
  • An appreciation of how to approach and implement tests around the data-lifecycle.
  • Fluent English speaker.

Nice to have

  • Experience operating with data in regulated environments (e.g. healthcare, life sciences) and implementing resultant strong data security practices.
  • Experience working with data-related services in Azure.
  • Experience with DDL operations in Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Experience with dbt.
  • Experience working with ECG data, especially with relation to signal processing of the waveforms.
