Job Description

Posted on: October 30, 2025

PART 1 - INTRODUCTION

You’re a freelance Learning Designer with a genuine love of writing and zero patience for ‘clicky-clicky-blah-blah’ elearning. You’re on the hunt for the next exciting opportunity and see the usual sausage factory work being advertised.

Do you persevere or give up? Select the answer that suits you best.

(This is the bit where you’d select a button if we could add one… just sit back and enjoy the ride, this one’s on us).

Oh, you’ve decided to persevere! Fantastic. Read on!

PART 2 - FAMILIARISATION

The coffee you’re drinking is keeping your levels of interest up… just… and just enough that you get to an ad from The Learning Hook (TLH, that’s us). “Oooh, this is different,” you think. “I wonder what these people are into.”

Well since you asked, here’s a couple of links to our website and some examples of our work:

Website: https://learninghook.com.au/

Showreel: https://youtu.be/P4KmRDIVcDQ

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thelearninghook

You can also check out episodes from our podcast, just search “The Learning Hook Podcast” in your favourite podcast app.

Has this made you more, or less interested in applying for a Learning Design role at TLH?

PART 3 – ALIGNIFICATION (yep that’s a word, now)

You’re still here? Excellent! By now you’ll have a good idea of what TLH does but let’s recap to ensure we’re on the same page:

  1. We live and breathe elearning.
  2. We bolster many of our solutions with video and animation.
  3. Where the solution fits, we innovate, but we always put good design before fancy tech or fads.
  4. No, it’s not all fun and games like this ad, but it can be on some projects.
  5. It can be many things because we provide a custom, premium level of service and delivery.
  6. Our clients come to us because we care about quality learning experiences that connect knowledge to action on the job and in the community.
  7. We tailor everything we do to the very specific needs of our audiences.
  8. We’ve been to Ikea a few times to get a bigger trophy cabinet… weird flex but hey, we’re proud of the awards we win, especially the LearnX Platinum Awards for Best Elearning Team two years running. That’s a good segue to the next item, though…
  9. Our people are awesome and we take very good care of them… we do this because the positive, inspiring working relationships we form yield meaningful results for everyone impacted by our projects.

(Quality assurance note: the long, numbered list above could be improved. Feel free to tell us in your cover letter how you’d reorganise information like that in an elearning module.)

If there are any other impressions of us you’d like to share, don’t be shy in your cover letter, but for now, take a short break. Maybe get some sun on your face or go pet the cat, we want you fresh for the detail that’s coming, it’s important!

PART 4 – THE DETAILS OF THE WORK

Here’s a list of things you’ve got nailed through years of experience:

  • When writing storyboards for elearning you’re able to communicate your vision clearly with clients and with your development team.
  • When meeting with clients you are the expert and able to guide them through the process of exploring their content, creating high-level designs and creative concepts.
  • You have a holistic understanding of how words, images, multimedia and interactivity come together to form a great learning experience.
  • You can tailor your writing style to suit the needs of the audience.
  • You can adapt quickly within new teams, templates and processes.
  • You take feedback like a world champ – in fact you thrive on it because you trust your peers and leaders to add value to your already-amazing work (call it a growth mindset).
  • You plan your workday/week/month meticulously, confidently working to budget and deadline without becoming a ball of unhealthy stress.

Here’s a list of things you’ve perhaps dabbled in and feel confident you can take to a new level (we can help you develop these skills, if needed – they’re not deal-breakers), or you might be all over them:

  • Writing scripts for animation and video.
  • Providing clear feedback to team members that elevates their work, and yours by extension.
  • Project management using Smartsheet or Microsoft Project, including the administrative side of managing schedules and budgets.
  • Developing content in industry standard tools such as Articulate Rise, Synthesia, Camtasia, Vyond.
  • Facilitating brainstorm and co-design sessions with team members and clients.
  • Speaking to adult learning principles and learning models (do Keller and Gagne ring any bells? Or perhaps the AGES model?) with clients and other team members, and applying them thoughtfully to your work.
  • Prompting AI tools such as ChatGPT and other content generators to augment your workflows and creativity.

PART 5 – DO WHAT YOU LOVE AND YOU’LL NEVER WORK A DAY IN YOUR LIFE

You love working with others and always look to make the process smooth for everyone involved.

You love seeing your vision through to completion, from initial meetings with clients, through storyboarding, and then quality assuring the work of graphic designers, developers and animators as they bring your hard work to pixel-perfect life.

You can thrive in a bit of intensity and are able to operate effectively in a fast-paced production environment.

You love the feeling of knowing you’ve delivered high quality work.

You enjoy a good work/life balance.

PART 6 – FLEXIBILITY

We are looking for freelance contractors and casuals who wish to work on a project-by-project basis.

We’re open to a range of flexible working arrangements. We currently work remotely based on AEST/AEDT time zone, with team members across Australia.

PART 7 – OUR VALUES

We’re a small team which means our values are always clearly visible in the things we do day-to-day. They come up in conversation all the time in the flow of work because they really do mean something to us.

Our core values underpin what we do together, individually and as a company.

Love all. Serve all.

We treat everybody (teammates, customers, partners) with the same high level of respect, trust, urgency, honesty and courteousness. We think through what it is that would help them the most.

Have fun. Make money.

We deeply value each other’s enjoyment of work; we do all we can to help each other grow within our roles and contribute to the prosperous growth of the organisation.

Quality. Always.

All services, all products and all interactions internally and externally, deliver value for the person receiving the service, product or communication.

Just in time, Just enough, and Just for Me. Nothing less will do.

We look for the ‘Triple J’ in all that we do, from learning design, courseware coding, product

development, general communications, business administration and marketing.

We own it.

All staff are accountable for their actions and decisions. We ‘Call it Out’ at the time we see it (the good and the bad!) We do this for ourselves and our teammates. We’re all receptive to being ‘called out’, keeping each other honest and celebrating wins.

PART 8 – WHERE TO FROM HERE?

A well written cover letter free of typos and technical errors is the absolute bare minimum. You don’t need to address every detail of this ad, just help us understand why you’re the person for the job.

In your letter, please pick one or more of our values and tell us why they resonate with you the most. And importantly: call out any items from Part 4 that you don’t feel confident in, it may not be a deal breaker so don’t stress. Transparency is paramount in enabling us to support your role development.

Your resume should be well presented and easy to read – the way you present information about yourself tells us a lot about you as a communicator. We need to see the experiences that make you a great learning designer in a workplace learning and development setting.

Thank you for your time spent reading our ad, we know how valuable it is.

  • We look forward to hearing from you.
