Job Title: Structured Cabling Design Engineer – Hyperscale Data Centers
Location: Multiple Locations Across the USA
Work Arrangement: Travel Required – Must Be Willing to Travel Across the USA
Employment Type: Full-Time
Visa: “Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.”
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Structured Cabling Design Engineer with a strong background in hyperscale data centers, enterprise infrastructure, and high-density fiber and copper cabling systems. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing structured cabling infrastructure to support large-scale data center deployments.
This role involves creating detailed engineering drawings, coordinating with network and MEP engineering teams, preparing technical documentation, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and project-specific requirements. Candidates must hold an active BICSI RCDD certification and be willing to travel across the USA based on project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Structured Cabling Design & Engineering
- Design end-to-end structured cabling infrastructure for hyperscale data centers, colocation facilities, and enterprise environments.
- Develop cabling designs using single-mode and multimode fiber, MPO/MTP high-density trunking, and Cat6/Cat6A copper cabling systems.
- Prepare detailed engineering drawings, including floor plans, rack elevations, cable pathway layouts, and fiber splicing diagrams.
- Utilize AutoCAD, Revit, and Bluebeam Revu to develop, review, and update design documentation.
- Calculate cable tray fill ratios, cable weight loads, bend radii, and pathway capacity for overhead and underfloor installations.
2. Cross-Functional Engineering Coordination
- Collaborate with Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) teams to ensure proper cable routing and infrastructure integration.
- Coordinate cabling pathways with data center cooling systems, hot/cold aisle containment, liquid cooling infrastructure, and HVAC airflow requirements.
- Work closely with network architects to align physical cabling infrastructure with logical network topologies, including spine-and-leaf architectures.
- Ensure cabling designs support current deployment requirements and future scalability.
3. Documentation & Project Estimation
- Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs), Scopes of Work (SOWs), material takeoffs, and project cost estimates.
- Review contractor submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), and installation drawings.
- Review redlined drawings and as-built documentation to verify compliance with approved designs.
- Coordinate with procurement, deployment, and construction teams to support project execution.
4. Quality Assurance & Standards Compliance
- Ensure all cabling designs comply with applicable TIA/EIA, BICSI, IEEE, NEC, NFPA, and project-specific standards.
- Evaluate fiber-optic performance requirements, optical loss budgets, fiber characterization, and high-density interconnect configurations.
- Conduct design reviews and support quality assurance activities to ensure installation accuracy and adherence to design specifications.
- Maintain consistent engineering documentation and deployment standards across multiple projects and locations.
Required Qualifications
- Active BICSI RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer) certification is mandatory.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in structured cabling design and engineering.
- At least 2 years of experience working on hyperscale data centers, enterprise data centers, or telecommunications infrastructure projects.
- Proven experience designing and supporting large-scale data center cabling deployments.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Bluebeam Revu.
- Strong knowledge of fiber-optic and copper cabling systems, including single-mode/multimode fiber, MPO/MTP, and Cat6/Cat6A.
- Experience with cable pathway design, tray capacity calculations, bend radius requirements, and cable load calculations.
- Understanding of optical loss budgets, fiber testing and characterization, and high-density network architectures.
- Knowledge of data center MEP coordination, cooling systems, containment structures, and airflow management.
- Strong technical documentation, coordination, problem-solving, and project management skills.
- Must be willing and available to travel across the USA as required by project needs.
