Audience & Growth Manager
Job Description
Posted on: February 5, 2026
About us
The Jewish Independent (TJI) is an independent, not-for-profit digital media outlet committed to high-quality journalism, thoughtful analysis, and robust public conversation.
Established in 2015, we exist to provide independent, ethical, and pluralistic journalism, with a particular focus on issues of relevance to Jewish communities in Australia and beyond — while engaging a broad, diverse readership interested in culture, politics and ideas.
TJI publishes original reporting, commentary, and analysis, and convenes events and conversations that bring people together around ideas that matter. We are proudly independent of political parties and institutions, and are guided by principles of editorial integrity and civil discourse.
As a small and growing organisation, TJI values collaboration, curiosity, and initiative. Our work is mission-driven, impact-focused, and grounded in the belief that independent media is essential to a healthy democracy and a thriving Jewish community.
About you
You are motivated by purpose as much as performance.
You enjoy working in a small, agile organisation where you can take ownership, contribute ideas, and see the direct impact of your work. You are organised, proactive, and comfortable balancing strategic thinking with hands-on delivery.
You care about ideas, public discourse, and the Jewish community, and understand the role independent media plays in fostering informed, thoughtful conversation. You bring sound judgement, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset to your work.
You are comfortable working with a range of stakeholders — colleagues, partners, contributors, and community members — and you value professionalism, respect, and integrity in all interactions. You are also comfortable working remotely and setting your own daily agenda.
Experience in media, not-for-profit, or community-based organisations is welcomed, but what matters most is your alignment with TJI’s values, your willingness to learn, and your commitment to contributing positively to our mission.
Role purpose
The Audience & Growth Manager is responsible for driving sustainable audience growth, engagement, and revenue for The Jewish Independent.
This role sits at the intersection of audience development, marketing strategy, fundraising support, and data-led growth, working closely with editorial, fundraising, and the Executive Director to ensure TJI reaches more readers, deepens loyalty, and strengthens its financial base.
This is a hands-on role: you will not only manage TJI’s marketing systems (e.g., Mailchimp, Stripe and related integrations), but also build, implement, and maintain the functional automation workflows, triggers, segmentation, and journeys so campaigns and lifecycle programs execute reliably end-to-end.
Key responsibilities
- Audience growth & engagement
- Develop and implement an audience growth strategy across email, web, social, and partnerships
- Grow and segment TJI’s email subscriber base, refine open rates, click-through, and retention
- Use analytics (GA, Mailchimp, Stripe/ data) to track donor behaviour and optimise giving
- Identify pathways to habitual readership and reduced reliance on email prompts
- Own lifecycle and automation marketing: design and execute end-to-end journeys (welcome/onboarding, re-engagement, lapsed donor, renewal prompts, event follow-up), including testing, optimisation, and continuous improvement
- Build the functionality that executes these journeys: create and maintain automations, triggers, rules, tagging/segmentation logic, and system connections (including working with contractors where needed) to ensure campaigns run correctly
2. Marketing & communications
- Lead TJI’s marketing calendar across brand promotion activities, fundraising moments, and key initiatives
- Oversee digital marketing assets, messaging, and audience journeys
- Support brand consistency and clarity across channels
- Work with external contractors (design, web, digital) as required
- Translate campaign intent into practical build: ensure emails, landing pathways, tagging, tracking, and triggers are configured accurately and launched on schedule
3. Revenue & fundraising support
- Collaborate with the Executive Director on donor acquisition and retention campaigns
- Support subscription/donation growth initiatives (Stripe, etc.)
- Test and refine messaging to convert readers into supporters
- Analyse donor and supporter data to inform strategy
- Implement and maintain donor/supporter automation flows connected to giving behaviour (post-donation comms, receipts/thank-you journeys where applicable, lapsed donor reactivation triggers, segmentation based on giving history)
4. Strategy & reporting
- Translate high-level organisational goals into measurable growth targets
- Prepare regular reporting for management and board (audience, engagement, growth trends)
- Identify risks and opportunities in audience and revenue performance
- Contribute to strategic planning and organisational sustainability discussions
5. Risk controls & data/privacy expectations
- Manage subscriber and donor data responsibly: maintain good practice around access controls, list hygiene, data minimisation, and secure handling of contact/payment-related data
- Ensure privacy and consent principles are reflected in day-to-day execution (unsubscribe compliance, permission-based segmentation, appropriate targeting, careful use of donor data)
- Maintain basic operational controls: clear documentation of key automations/triggers, change tracking where practical, testing before launch, and prompt issue resolution when automations fail or data quality issues appear
- Escalate any suspected data incidents, security concerns, or system risks to the Executive Director promptly
Skills / experience (essential)
- Demonstrated experience in marketing, growth, or audience development (media, NFP, or purpose-driven orgs preferred)
- Strong understanding of digital marketing channels, especially email
- Data-literate with the ability to interpret analytics and turn insights into action
- Excellent written communication and messaging skills
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
- Demonstrated ability to build and execute lifecycle/automation marketing programs (not just plan them): hands-on experience creating segmentation, triggers, journeys, and testing/optimising automation flows
- Comfort working with marketing systems and integrations (e.g., connecting Mailchimp - website - Stripe, setting up tracking, triggers, and data flows; using contractors where needed but owning the outcome)
- Sound judgement handling subscriber/donor data with basic privacy and risk controls appropriate to a role managing email lists and supporter data
- Proficient using Mailchimp, Google Analytics, Stripe. Canva, or similar tools
Desirable
- Experience in journalism, media, or publishing
- Experience supporting fundraising or membership models
- Understanding of Jewish community or community-based organisations
